First some background. Today I broke down and signed up for the Sprint PCS Vision service. It's a minor $15 per month and hey, having the internet on my phone means I carry my phone with me. Anyone who knows me knows my cell phone habits and how horrible they are. Having an internet connection, a phone, twitter, flickr, etc means I carry my phone. Sad but true.
Problem is, the Palm Blazer is just okay for me, nothing fancy. Opera offers a browser called Opera Mini, that should be the ticket. Here's my problem: Opera Mini (along with many other applications like gmail) need the JVM to run.
As I mentioned in the opening, as of January 8th 2008, Palm no longer has the rights to offer the IBM WebSphere Micro Environment Java Virtual Machine for Palm OS.
So here's what I did in order to make this work:
Find the JVM files online. You can find it from torrent sites but not everyone is down with bittorrent. There is an entry on Download Squad where a user posts a link to download a zip file (download it here).
I'm on a Mac and don't have a proper cradle for my Treo 650. This means I need to transfer the file via Bluetooth or SD Card. Problem is Treo only wanted to "see" the file if it was hotsynced. Some crafty googling brought me to a nice little script that gets around this. Via my Treo 650, I pointed my "blazer" to palmfreeware.com (Mobile | Web and you will find a link to download the installer.)
Note: The files I transferred via bluetooth from the WEME571.zip were /JVM/ARM4T/J9JavaVMMidp20.prc and /JVM/ARM4T/JavaVMCheck_enUS.prc.
I located the installer on my Treo and ran the installer. Voila!
Now I'd like to have the last 90 minutes of my life back.
It's the goal of every photographer to do as much "in camera" as possible such as cropping, exposure, lighting etc. The more you do in camera the less time you spend in photoshop which means the faster you can produce your image. However many times, even after the extra in-camera-effort, the photo still needs a little love in photoshop to make it just right.
I spent two hours at the Sprint store yesterday waiting in line for the new Samsung Instinct. I was one of the lucky recipients of the pre-screening email which meant I could get the phone a day early.
Why not spice up your blog or photoblog by displaying a preloading image while your main photo is loading? This is by no means a new technique, I've been doing it for quite a few years and you see it all over the web now. A few years back I had a short DIY on how to do this but it got moved somewhere. So, here it is again!
Back in 2006 I shared how I made my own ring light with supplies from the local hardware store. I made a new ring light recently and wanted to share how I did it. This new version uses less power and looks good enough to take in front of a client/model (the old one was ugly).
New Ring Light Tutorial ComingI built a new and improved ring light. This is a sample photo of me, again at 3 am after I finished it. The new light will be more portable, not as dangerous, not as hot and more environment friendly (104 total watts instead of 800 watts). Look for that tutorial soon.
