A Letter from the King of Winghaven

12 A pretty hilarious thing happened last week in Winghaven and I almost missed it. A letter was sent from the City of Winghaven telling all residents that they are not to have political signs in their yards. Apparently someone on my street, hereto known as "The King of Winghaven" wrote up a reply and stuck it in everyone's mail box. And now I share it with you.

Project: Rick Roll URL Checker

0 Well it seems that Rick Rolling has reared it's ugly head again, at least in IRC. So I thought I'd take a few minutes (10 to be exact) and write up a little "Rick Roll Checker".

Enable Line Numbers in CFEclipse

0 I've been terribly annoyed with an issue with Eclipse / CFEclipse lately where line numbers are not showing up by default. Oh, and the option to enable them in the preferences is not there either. This becomes a problem when, you know, you're trying to work. ;-) I found a quick and dirty solution to enable line numbers.

Make your product photos pop with a white background using photoshop

6 It's the goal of every photographer to do as much "in camera" as possible such as cropping, exposure, lighting etc. The more you do in camera the less time you spend in photoshop which means the faster you can produce your image. However many times, even after the extra in-camera-effort, the photo still needs a little love in photoshop to make it just right.

How to disable disqus comment voting / clout control

5 There's been some back and forth on the comment rating and clout surrounding the disqus commenting system, which I use and happen to like. I found a quick and dirty solution to hiding the voting arrows on your site using jQuery.

Reuse - Drawer organizers from a pizza box

2 Our junk drawers were outta control. Since we moved in to our new house the 4 drawers on the island in the kitchen were a mess. Sarah and I went drawer organizer shopping only to find them to be a little overpriced.

Firefox Download Day

4 I just had to post this real quick. It's my Firefox download day certificate. Doesn't really do that much for my geek status but still. I downloaded it on 3 machines.

2nd ride with new mountain bike

0 The second ride (See the first) was not quite as long but doubly brutal. It seems like this ride had a lot more hills and obstacles.

1st bike ride with new mountain bike

2 Let's get this out in the open: I'm out of shape. I want to get back into shape so for father's day Sarah bought me a brand new mountain bike. Just owning the bike isn't enough so I went for a bike ride this morning. I learned a few things...

Got my Sprint Samsung Instinct Phone!

5 I spent two hours at the Sprint store yesterday waiting in line for the new Samsung Instinct. I was one of the lucky recipients of the pre-screening email which meant I could get the phone a day early.

Post to ping.fm from your widget dashboard

14 I discovered something sort of a cool today after Sean at Ping.fm added a new feature. Ping.fm now allows you to "pop-out" the posting window sort of like when you're in gmail and you want to chat in a new window. Anyway you can also add this pop-out to your dashboard, here's how.

Ping.fm gets a redesign courtesy of yours truly (that's me)

7 I was honored to work with Sean (@seamoss) on the redesign of his totally awesome startup at ping.fm (@pingfm). It was an honor to even be considered for the task.

Look what I just bought from Ashley Goldberg and Drew Bell

1 Tonight on Twitter I saw @ashleygoldberg post a link to Sadie Magazine where they featured some of her work and did a Q & A.

Our impatience and the real people behind social web services

2 Tonight, not even thinking it through, I made a comment on Twitter about how I was starting to like disqus (link) less. I said it not really even thinking about it and a few minutes later @danielha one of the founders of disqus asked why. It hit me, whoa... behind all of these free web services are real people. What?

Openfire: iChat with MSN using your locally hosted Jabber server

0 Did you know? You actually CAN use iChat to talk with your MSN buddies. I use MSN for business and it always urked me to have multiple clients open. Adium did the trick for awhile but I really like how iChat integrates with the other OS X applications.

Live Coverage of the Phoenix Lander

0 The University of Arizona is the first public university to lead a mission to Mars. The Phoenix Mars Mission, scheduled to land May 25, 2008, is the first in NASA's "Scout Program." Scouts are designed to be highly innovative and relatively low-cost complements to major missions being planned as part of the agency's Mars Exploration Program.

Trying out Dipity

0 Here's a cool service: "Dipity is the easiest way to make and share interactive timelines about the people and things you care about." Check out my timeline below.

Project: List Manager - Create a list for anything (todo, grocery, to call, etc)

4 So I was out and about the other day and I called Sarah to see if she wanted me to pick up anything. Of course with a new child we sort of have to plan a trip to the store. Right at that moment I knew it would be cool if she could hop online, make up a quick list for me and I could access it with my phone. Here we go!

Chemicals in products: Shaving Cream

0 I've been hammering on this pretty hard lately in my personal life and blog. I'm on a quest to live as naturally and organic and chemical free as possible. So I decided to do some very light research this morning and here is what I found.

Project: Baby Action Tracker (poop, pee, eat, etc)

4 Before we left the hospital the nurse gave us a chart so we can track our baby's feeding and pooping. I guess that's kinda common? Anyway the geek in me wanted to make a little mini-app so I did. And here it is!

Reuse - Make old shopping bags into a wallet

1 On my quest to go green, I'm making a quick stop to pat myself on the back for mastering one of the R's, Recycle. Now I'm starting to focus on another R, Reuse. Today I mentioned something on twitter and @tony sent me a cool link on how to reuse old shopping bags.

Boycotting Starbucks - Supporting local coffee shops

6 That's the final straw. Starbucks is officially dead to me. Although this isn't the best reason to quit (I'm sure there are better reasons, like supporting local coffee shops now and then) but it'll due. Every-single-time I get a drink from Starbucks, it is not delivered as ordered. It's a common theme out here in the suburbs. I'm done.

Tower Grove Farmers' Market needs your support.

0 Supporting the Tower Grove Farmers' Market is the smart thing to do. Why? Cause it's the right thing to do, AND you get a t-shirt. Beat that! It starts up again this season: Every Saturday from May 10 through October 25, 8:30am until 12:30pm.

Mobile Photo Blog - Post from your Sprint phone to your blog using Coldfusion

4 I've had my Treo 650 for quite some time now. I've only recently started using the camera portion of my phone. I'd really like to get the photos on the web but the burden of transferring the images from my phone to my computer / from my computer to my blog kept me from doing so. I was able to put together a solution for this, read on.

Saving old .php files and www to non www with ISAPI_Rewrite

0 Tonight I was checking page rank, looked at referrals in Google Analytics and was browsing around in Google Webmaster Tools along with other geeky spring site cleaning stuff.

Home Office: Getting greener by the day

3 As you may or may not know, I work from home. I've made some efforts to make my workplace more "green-friendly" so I thought I'd list a few here to note my progress. If you have any other ideas I'd definitely be up for 'em.

Palm Treo IBM JVM download and other tasty abbreviations

11 I'm posting my Palm Treo 650 woes with Opera Mini, the need for the IBM WebSphere JVM that Palm no longer offers because Palm is (in my opinion) going down the tubes. It took some digging, I got it working finally and here is how I did it.

Must Read Book: Green Greener Greenest

2 I picked up an excellent book a few days ago. It's titled "Green, Greener, Greenest" by Lori Bongiorno. It's a practical guide to making eco-smart choices a part of your life. Lori worked for BusinessWeek and has written for The Green Guide (among other magazines) so her writing style is spot-on.

Organic Consumers Association: Coming Clean Campaign

Bisphenol A in baby bottles?

0 Imagine my surprise when after only 5 minutes of browsing the net I found the baby bottles we bought contained Bisphenol A (BPA). There are two schools of thought when it comes to BPA, 1) It's totally safe 2) It's totally toxic.

Going Green: Just getting started

1 That's it. I'm "going green". Frankly, I'm a bit mad / pissed / fed up (call it what you want) with the amount of crap we unknowingly ingest and inhale through our food, household cleaners and other materiels on a day-to-day basis. I've been doing some reading, a lot of reading and my findings have been quite sobering.

Fake Image Preloader for Photoblogs

0 Why not spice up your blog or photoblog by displaying a preloading image while your main photo is loading? This is by no means a new technique, I've been doing it for quite a few years and you see it all over the web now. A few years back I had a short DIY on how to do this but it got moved somewhere. So, here it is again!

Just installed Firefox Beta - First Impressions

2 I just now finally installed Firefox beta which I believe was released in mid February. So I'm a late bloomer but I thought I'd make a quick post (from my new FF3 beta, mind you) and give you my impressions.

DIY Ring Light Tutorial Revised (New & Improved!)

19 Back in 2006 I shared how I made my own ring light with supplies from the local hardware store. I made a new ring light recently and wanted to share how I did it. This new version uses less power and looks good enough to take in front of a client/model (the old one was ugly).

Hello? Eclipse? Anybody there? Hello?

0 Eclipse has been mean to me today. I'm working on a .cfm template that's around 1300 lines. Doing simple search/replace brings beach ball madness.

jQuery saves the day, again

2 I'm a huge fan of jQuery. Call me a fanboi I don't care, I just love it. It's actually one of the main reasons why I wanted to redevelop my site, to convert everything over to jQuery.

An Evening with Quincy Jones

0 I just caught the tail end of "An Evening With Quincy Jones" and was really impressed. Check out the show on PBS.

Thank You Fishalicious

1 A few months back I tried to install Coldfusion locally together with MAMP and it was a horrible disaster because I was on a newly released version of Leopard. A few months later I decided to give it a try and found this great tutorial.

Relaunched Fresh Blend Media

0 I really hate bragging and/or boasting but I have to mention the fact that Sarah and I just got done relaunching our business website. It's been hard working until 3am every morning but I'm glad we finally got it done.

IT'S A BOY! Ultrasound Scans!

8 Ok I'm clearly late on posting these ultrasound scans. Look closely and you'll see the date is from the 20th of November. Better late than never!

Nobosh, it's well, No Bosh

0 Just wanted to send a quick shout out to Ubuntu for saving the day once again. Getting a leg up on storage has been a real challenge for Fresh Blend Media and I needed a solution quick. Ubuntu to the rescue...

The Mac and PC? In One?

1 I've been so much in awe with my new iMac(s) that I haven't had time to write about it. I'm now running Windows XP on my Mac (yes, I still have a few PC apps that I can't develop without).
