The most killer feed reader combination available to man

I'm a fan of RSS feeds. I don't subscribe to this notion that feeds are outdated and dying. Twitter and Facebook don't cut it for me, the information just flows too quickly. Having said that, I am using a couple programs to read feeds and you just have to know about it.

First off, I use Google Reader as my core reader. For me, it's the best solution; I can read it on my phone, computer, anyone else's computer, pretty much anywhere and everywhere. I have my Google Reader shared stories plugged into Friendfeed, so any time I share a story, Friendfeed picks it up which posts to Twitter and Facebook. Works pretty snappy like that. Anyway I've been using Google Reader for years and have no interest in changing that, however ...

Feedly

Feedly rocks on a level unmatched by any current feed readers available, plain and simple. Feedly is a Firefox plugin/addon that brings all of your feeds together in a magazine-like digest. It syncs with Google Reader, so as you add feeds to Google Reader, Feedly picks them up. I look at Feedly as a nice social media glove that fits right over Google Reader. Anyway, because feedly is a Firefox addon, the feedly icon sits in your toolbar for easy access.

Here's a screen cap of a folder I created on Google Reader called "Web Development". Feedly picked that up and shows it on the sidebar.

Along with every feed, on the sidebar you get:

  • Sources (where the story came from)
  • "You might also like" - Which is a really nice way to discover new feeds
  • Top recommenders
  • Tweet gallery
  • Youtube gallery
  • Flickr gallery
  • There's a ton more, I haven't even enabled everything in the settings yet

Along with every story you get:

  • Tweet stream about the story
  • Friendfeed conversations about the story
  • Google reader comments on the story
  • Any diggs/digg comments on the story

Not only that, but you can share the story to a butt ton of different sites:

If you use Google Reader, and you have not tried Feedly, and after reading my very vague half assed review you are still not going to try Feedly, you deserve to be smacked real good.

Newsstand

Again, on the iPhone I can easily use the Google Reader web app, works fine. But the UI leaves something to be desired, I like more bells and whistles. Hence Newsstand, which also syncs with Google Reader just like Feedly. Newstand, while not even close to being as feature rich as Feedly, brings in a lot of the social angles like sharing to Twitter and Delicious. Cool thing about Newsstand is they have this view which makes skimming stories more enjoyable:

Here's a screen cap of my Web Development folder within newstand.

And this is after I drill down into one of the feeds:

Reading a story:

The options I'm presented with when clicking to share. Note that I have only enabled a few services, you can share stores via Twitter, Delicious, ReaditLater, Email and Instapaper:

Sharing the story through twitter:

There you have it

Two pretty killer ways to read your feeds and share them with friends. Newsstand is a hefty $4.99 but I don't blink at that, I think these iPhone devs need to get paid so I'll happily pay that. Feedly is absolutely free and you'd be near insane not to try it out. Really!

*Edit - I want to give Streamy an honorable mention. Although it's a great service, It doesn't actually sync w/ Google Reader. Yes, you can import your feeds, but if you do that twice it'll duplicate them. I also found the app to be very buggy. Just my limited opinion and experience.
